Women Environmental Programme (WEP) is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-religious and voluntary organisation that was established in 1997 by a group of grassroots women in Nigeria, whose major aim is to address the gender injustices on issues relating to environment, economic and social rights of women, children and youths in the society. WEP had its first head office in Kaduna State but has since moved its Headquarters to Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.  WEP has operational offices in two geopolitical zones (North central and North east) in Nigeria.  There is 15 fulltime staff, two interns, two international volunteers, 2 national volunteers and consultants.

WEP is operating as an NGO under the Companies and Allied Matters Act by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).  The organisation is administered by a Board of Directors, while the management team see to the day to day administration of the organisation with the Executive Director as the operational head.  WEP has United Nations special Economic and Social Council Status (UNECOSOC status).
Organisational Structure

The organization consists of three main organs: the General Assembly, Board of Directors and the Management.  The General Assembly includes both individuals and organisational members and currently it has a membership of over 3000. 

WEP’s Board of Directors is a 9 member Board, comprising of 4 females and 5 males.  The Board is the policy making body of the organisation and meets annually to review performance of the organisation, approve programmes and budget for the organisation.

The Management, headed by the Executive Director (who is also a member of the Board of Directors) is saddled with the responsibility of policy implementation and the general day-to-day running of the organization. The structure is organized into four proposed projects manned by the support staff: Environment, Governance, Peace and Conflict Resolution, and Natural Resource Development. There is also a unit of Administration and Finance which is saddled with the administrative and accounting issues.
