7.        Assessment of Gender Knowledge and Awareness, vulnerability and Adaptation Strategies to the impacts of Climate Change in Northern Nigeria.
It has been determined that global climate change will have a strong impact on Nigeria, and West Africa more generally, particularly in the areas of agriculture, land use, energy and water resources. Nigeria's long term development priority of poverty reduction will be severely constrained, if insufficient attention is paid to the current and future impacts of climate change. It is based on this fact that the Building Nigeria's Response to Climate Change (BNRCC) Project was developed and been implemented with funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA),  and implemented by the Nigeria Environmental Study/Action Team (NEST). Women Environmental programme (WEP) is carrying out a research proponent of the BNRCC project which is based on the "Assessment of Gender Knowledge and Awareness, vulnerability and Adaptation Strategies to the impacts of Climate Change in Northern Nigeria". Three States are selected from the North West, North East and North central with two local governments from each of the selected states. The project objective is identifying major climate hazards and analyzing the processes, by which they impact on human livelihoods and welfare in the study area, determine gender differences in awareness and perception of climate variability and climate change and the impacts of associated hazards, evaluate gender differences in vulnerability to the impacts of identified hazards of climate change and variability.

8.        Global Environment Facility (Small Projects Grants)
Food insecurity is one of the major threats that people at the project communities of Kyado, Naka and Yauri are currently facing. Although agriculture is the backbone of these communities economy, food shortage is becoming a serious threat in recent times. About 90% of the farmers are smallholders and women constitute about 60% who face a host of challenges in their farming activities. These include; poor soil, high cost of farm inputs, erratic rainfall, drought and desertification, lack of appropriate technology, lack of markets for crops, reliability on artificial fertilizer which further degrades the already exhausted soil and insufficient knowledge of organic fertilizer application, shortage of government extension workers. These areas are characterized by high population densities and high prevalence of malaria/ HIV/AIDS. This project is carried out by WEP with support from GEF (Global Environmental Facility - Small Projects Grants).
